The strength of the magnetic field and the intense pressure induce the necessary thermal energy required for the process. Some researchers have also achieved similar results by utilizing a focused high-intensity laser beam and high pressure conditions. Later, when the pressure is reduced, the molten diamond re-solidifies into a solid crystal. This behavior has prompted scientists to ponder over the possible existence of seas of liquid nitrogen on planets like Neptune and Uranus, as a consequence of intense pressure and abundance of carbon.
A theory suggests that most of the diamonds are millions and millions of years old and they are believed to be formed much before the earliest plants on the Earth. Since coal is mainly formed from plant debris, this theory proves that most of the diamonds are not formed from coal.
The now closed Mir mine in Mirny, Eastern Siberia, in Russia is the deepest open pit diamond mine in the world, with a depth of 525 meters and a diameter extending up to 1,200 m. The Jwaneng mine, located in the Kalahari desert, in south-central Botswana, is the richest diamond mine in the world, and is owned by Debswana (a partnership between De Beers and the Botswana government).
They studied the rough Cullinan for almost three months and prepared themselves for the big day. On 10th February, 1908, Joseph Asscher decided to cut it. On that afternoon, he struck a hammer on a V-shaped groove that he had made on the diamond, by placing a cleaving blade in the grove. The result was that the blade broke apart in two, but the diamond still remained intact. Soon, another blade was arranged and Joseph Asscher made his second attempt to cut Cullinan. He was successful in his second attempt and the diamond broke apart, just in the way he thought it would. Legend has it that Joseph Asscher fainted after cutting the Cullinan. The two parts of Cullinan weighed 1,040 carats and 1,977.5 carats each.
