The manner in which a diamond may be cut also adds to the price of a diamond. Its cut also defines the amount of light that will reflect and refract from the piece. If the cut is too shallow or too deep, it allows a lot of light to escape from the other areas. A well-cut diamond will add to the fiery sparkle of a diamond. To maximize this effect, the diamond cutter has to have accurate geometric calculations.
Cutting the Cullinan was a crucial task. The famous 'Royal Asscher Diamond Company' was run by the Asscher brothers, Abraham and Joseph Asscher, in Amsterdam. They had successfully cut the Excelsior (the largest diamond before the discovery of Cullinan) and many other large diamonds. The great responsibility of cutting of the world's largest diamond, Cullinan, was a given to the Asscher brothers.
Sapphire are a type of the mineral 'corundum', which is an aluminum oxide. Their structure comprises hexagonal crystals of corundum, which makes them extremely hard. In fact, after diamonds, sapphires are the second hardest gemstones on Earth, being rated 9 on the Mohs scale. Trace elements such iron, copper, titanium, chromium, etc., present in their structures give sapphires their different colors, including blue, green, orange, purple, etc. White sapphire is the only one which has no trace element, and is thus considered pure.
So these are some of the theories that rubbish the claim that diamonds are formed from coal. However, there are chances that diamonds form from coal, in case of subduction. Conversion of coal to diamonds is a natural process that takes millions of years. Even though there are carbon atoms in coal, the amount of impurities are so high, that it takes millions and millions of years for the coal to transform to its nearly purest form - graphite. The conversion of graphite to diamonds takes some more millions of years. Presence of coal in impact sites may also result in formation of diamonds. Even if you want to make diamonds from coal through artificial methods, the resultant diamond will be of very poor quality, due to the high level of impurities.
