Mari Holzer Diamonds, May 30th , 2017. When searching for your diamond, you should have a fundamental, if not thorough, knowledge of diamonds, their grades, and how those grades actually affect the gems appearance. A diamonds paper evaluation, including the certificate, can only be used as a reference to a diamonds true beauty. A certificate will not usually state whether or not the diamond has a bow-tie or fish-eye effect, nor will it differentiate visual from non visual inclusions without the use of a microscope. The easy rule of thumb to follow is this: if you are buying for investment reasons only, then paper evaluations and certificates is all that is required, however, if buying for yourself or a loved one, it is best to actually see the diamond first hand.

Naiara Reinders Diamonds, May 31st , 2017. When a diamond has the best cut, the incident light falling on it passes through the crown, table, and finally the pavilion, where it gets reflected from one side to the other before escaping through the diamond's table again. Such a cut is also known as the ideal cut and this phenomenon of light passing through the diamond is called "light return". The diamond's brightness, dispersion and brilliance is enhanced or depreciated based on the movement of the light within it. A bad cut or a slight amount of asymmetry severely hampers the quality of the diamond as it causes the light to escape out of the diamond prematurely. This phenomenon is also called "light leakage".
