In Mineralogy, a diamond is studied as the second most stable form of carbon; the first being graphite. The superlative physical qualities associated with a diamond are characterized by the covalent bonding between its atoms. This form of carbon is popular for its hardness and thermal conductivity. Cutting and polishing of this element enhances its optical characteristics. There are different types of cuts used to work around the rigid lattice and wide transparency. According to the application, a diamond is cut to attain a clear and colorless appearance, devoid of defects or impurities. In the original form, diamonds are known to display color variations according to the impurities present in them. While boron content gives the diamond a blue color, nitrogen gives it a yellowish tinge, and lattice defects result in a slightly brown hue. The stone displays a high optical dispersion, and distinct and characteristic luster, that makes it one of the most sought after gems. Diamonds are synonymous with excellent mechanical and optical properties that are further enhanced by the right cuts.
Another twist to the Kohinoor tale is in the form of a curse upon all those who come in contact with it. The Shah of Persia died in a palace revolt trying to defend his treasures, including the Kohinoor. Most of the Indian empires that came into power suffered misfortune and misery, including Ranjit Singh, whose 8 descendants were unable to produce heirs and his entire royal line was eventually wiped out. The British overran the region with the support of Kharak Singh, but he himself died after one year of rule. After this Duleep Singh, the son of Ranjit Singh came into power. Subsequently he went into a war against the British, which he badly lost. According to the conditions of the peace treaty the Kohinoor was to be handed over to the British. Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth both wore the Kohinoor and neither of them fell prey to any misfortune. On the contrary, Queen Victoria's status improved on acquiring the diamond and on January 1, 1877 she became the Empress of India.

The four major parameters, also known as the 4 Cs, carry the paramount importance while evaluating the quality and price. This 4 Cs are Color, Carat, Clarity, and Cut. So, it is of utmost importance to understand the grading and phenomena associated with it, if you are planning to purchase it. By understanding these parameters, you can decide which graded diamond to go for.
