☛ Even though the Kimberley Process does not require the retailers to know from which mine their diamonds originated, a select few retailers have taken measures to trace the origin of the diamonds being sold by them.
Diamonds are formed deep inside the earth, where the temperature and pressure are very high. They are transported to the surface of the earth by the molten magma.
Similarly, a diamond is not indestructible. The fact that diamonds are cut and shaped to be used as jewelry indicates that, it is possible to shatter or break the crystal under the right conditions. Under normal conditions of atmospheric temperature and pressure, a diamond retains all its physical and chemicals properties, since the covalent bonds between the carbon atoms require an immensely high amount of energy to be broken. Therefore, if a high-enough temperature and pressure environment is provided, along with suitable catalysts, it is possible to change the physical and/or chemical nature of a diamond.
Black diamonds have been found to contain trace elements of nitrogen and hydrogen. The study published in 2006 analyzed the hydrogen in black diamond samples using infrared-detection instruments and found that the quantity indicated that the mineral formed in a supernova explosion prior to the formation of the Solar System. These diamonds were formed by carbon-rich cosmic dust in an environment near carbon stars. The diamonds were incorporated into solid bodies that subsequently fell to Earth as meteorites.
