The Octahedron is the largest naturally formed octahedral diamond in the world at 616 carats and is a Canary Diamond. This natural stone was discovered in 1964 in the Dutoitspan mine, located in the Kimberley region of South Africa. The Kimberley Octahedron remains uncut, so the color and distribution grades cannot be given to this diamond. The owners of the mine prefer to conserve the stone in the condition that it was found. The Kimberley Octahedron can be viewed at the Kimberely Big Hole mine.
You might have heard about cleaning diamond rings with vinegar. A mixture of equal parts of white vinegar and water is used for this purpose. The ring is soaked for 10 to 15 minutes, before brushing with a soft brush. Rinse in plain water and dry the stone immediately.
Before the Gemology Institute of America (GIA) standardized diamond grading, the measurements were done by national standards. That made it difficult to import or export diamonds, because one country's standards may be higher or lower than another. This was especially the case with color, the problem which GIA standards solved completely.
A typical rose cut diamond has a unique shape and facet arrangement. It has a flat bottom and an elevated pointed dome, with triangular facets forming a point. The dome is generally in the shape of a hemisphere or a pyramid. The number of triangular facets in a rose cut diamond may vary between 12 to 24. Generally it has a lower tier of triangular facets, which in combination with the upper tier, gives the look of a rose bud. The facets in the upper tier are called star facets, and the ones in the lower tier are known as the diagonal facets. Usually, the middle portion of a rose cut diamond has six triangular facets, which meet at a point in the center. The outline of this diamond is usually circular, but there are oval, hexagonal, and pear-shaped domes. The facet arrangement in rose cut diamonds are usually in multiples of six.
