The blue and the red diamonds are considered to be the most rare and expensive ones amongst the fancy colored diamonds. The blue color that a diamond gets is due to the presence of boron in it. Blue diamonds are mined in Australia and South Africa. Red diamonds on the other hand, get their color from nitrogen. They are mined in Australia too. It is believed that at present only fifty red diamonds are there in the world!
Diamonds are examined mainly by the 'four Cs': carat, clarity, color, and cut. They are measured in carats; one carat equals 1/5th of a gram. These gemstones also may show different colors like white, yellow, brown, pink, red, blue, purple, green, violet, and orange. Out of these, the white, yellow, and brown ones are most commonly used. A diamond's color can be determined by studying its face up and down. Their clarity determines how pure they are, and the ones having less blemishes and inclusions have better clarity. Cuts in diamonds enhance their color, shine, and hide inclusions. If the cuts are too deep or shallow, the gemstone will not have a good dispersion. Pear, emerald, marquise, and brilliant are the most popular diamond cuts.
Diamonds are a symbol of everlasting love. Earrings are usually given as wedding gifts, and even on anniversaries, birthdays, and special occasions. Princess cuts are typically available as ear studs, hoops, and sometimes in gold rings with a diamond drop or with a chandelier-style finish.
The now closed Mir mine in Mirny, Eastern Siberia, in Russia is the deepest open pit diamond mine in the world, with a depth of 525 meters and a diameter extending up to 1,200 m. The Jwaneng mine, located in the Kalahari desert, in south-central Botswana, is the richest diamond mine in the world, and is owned by Debswana (a partnership between De Beers and the Botswana government).
