Rashmi Jameela. Diamonds. August 14th , 2017.
Diamonds, whether natural or man-made, are the hardest substances found on earth. According to Mohs scale of mineral hardness, these gems are rated 10, with their absolute hardness value being 1600.
As per old beliefs and customs, it is believed that the engagement diamond ring was worn on the third finger of the left hand because the ancient Egyptians believed the vein directly connected to the heart.
Many legends and ancient beliefs surround the origin of diamonds. While the ancient Hindus believed that diamonds were created from bolts of lightning, the ancient Greeks thought they were the tears of the Gods, stellar splinters or crystallized lightning!
Canada's first diamond mine is the Ekati mine, which is 300 miles northeast of Yellowknife. It opened in 1998 and is primarily owned by the Australian mining conglomerate BHP Billiton, who own an 80% share. The minority share of 20% is owned by Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson (10% each), who are the geologists who discovered the mines. It has yielded 40 million carats (8,000 kg/17,636 lbs.) out of six open pits, between 1998 and 2008.
