The manner in which a diamond may be cut also adds to the price of a diamond. Its cut also defines the amount of light that will reflect and refract from the piece. If the cut is too shallow or too deep, it allows a lot of light to escape from the other areas. A well-cut diamond will add to the fiery sparkle of a diamond. To maximize this effect, the diamond cutter has to have accurate geometric calculations.
The cushion cut was quite popular, as well as in great demand in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was referred to as the "pillow cut" or the "candlelight diamond", as it appeared exceptionally brilliant in candlelight. Since 1830, most diamonds were cut in this style for almost 70 years, and its popularity has re-emerged, especially for traditionally cut gemstones.
Black diamonds are found only in Brazil and the Central African Republic. Approximately 600 tons of conventional diamonds have been mined, traded, polished since 1900. But not a single black diamond has been discovered in the world's mining fields. The geological settings where diamonds are found or mined are virtually identical with the one exception, the Black Diamond.
Both white sapphires and diamonds have their lab-created counterparts. These artificial gemstones are literally grown in labs around the world using several chemical processes. They almost exactly resemble their natural versions, and even lack their imperfections. Yet, they are valued lower in the gemstone market.
