It involves coating the crystal with a layer of graphene, which is a one-atom thick substance composed of pure carbon. When the coated crystal is heated to high temperatures in order to bond the two substances, a restructuring and bonding between the two elements can be observed. Since both substances are impermeable, the water trapped between them transforms into a supercritical phase, that possess the ability to steadily corrode the surface of the diamond. However, the purpose of the experiment is not only focused on etching the diamond, but also to study the effect of high temperature and pressure on the characteristics and behavior of different liquids.
The blue and the red diamonds are considered to be the most rare and expensive ones amongst the fancy colored diamonds. The blue color that a diamond gets is due to the presence of boron in it. Blue diamonds are mined in Australia and South Africa. Red diamonds on the other hand, get their color from nitrogen. They are mined in Australia too. It is believed that at present only fifty red diamonds are there in the world!
The diamonds that lie in the Earth's mantle, come out to the surface, through volcanic eruptions that are deep in origin. The molten magma, along with diamonds and rocks from the mantle, comes out and cools off to form kimberlites that are the major sources of these gemstones.
