A theory suggests that most of the diamonds are millions and millions of years old and they are believed to be formed much before the earliest plants on the Earth. Since coal is mainly formed from plant debris, this theory proves that most of the diamonds are not formed from coal.
Located in the city of Mirny, Eastern Siberia (Russia), the Mir or the Mirny Mines (Mirny in Russian means "peaceful") is known as one among the world's largest man-made holes. Interestingly, some refer to it as the 'Navel of the Earth'.
Sapphire is the second hardest natural mineral on the Mohs scale, surpassed only by diamond. They are, unlike the others in this review, a natural stone. Their radiance and brilliance are not up to the standards of diamond however. Nevertheless, quality white sapphires priced at around $220 per carat are a good diamond alternative.
