Diamonds, as you already know, are probably the most precious gemstones that one would want to own. They are basically stones dug out from mines, cut and polished till they appear glistening and stunning as we see them in the stores. Diamonds are found in many colors. The white (or colorless) ones are the most common variety. However, diamonds are available in almost every color of the rainbow too - yellow, pink, green, purple, black, blue, red, gray and brown. Red diamonds are among the rarest. But what we'll be focusing on here are the brown ones. Those gorgeous earth colored diamonds that adorn quite a few fingers, ears and necks these days.
According to this system, the diamond cut grade depends on its design, face-up appearance, and also the craftsmanship that has gone into it. The fire and brilliance of the diamond is evaluated by considering all these factors together. Based on these parameters, the GIA grade system rates diamonds as "Excellent", "Very Good","Good" "Fair", and "Poor". GIA's diamond cut grading system uses 70,000 individual observations, 38.5 million proportion sets and a computer based predictive model to perform the cut assessment. The system came into effect in January 2006 and most of the diamonds graded before will not be entitled to the laboratory-assigned cut grade.

The best method to put the debate of real vs. fake diamonds to rest is to go for a fog test. All you need to do is bring the diamond close to your mouth and breathe over it. If you find that the stone remains foggy for about 2-4 seconds, the diamond is a sure shot fake. If it were a real diamond, it would have cleared off even before you had a look at it.
